How To Make Tamarind Rice / Pulihora

Pulihora is a popular rice food of South India and is usually prepared during religious as well as social functions and is offered as naivedyam / prashad to God. In almost all the South Indian temples, Pulihora is offered as prasadam to God. In fact this rice dish is very easy to prepare and is often carried while travelling as this will not spoil easily.

Ingredients Required

  • 1 cup rice
  • 2 cups water
  • half cup vegetable oil
  • half cup tamarind extract / juice
  • few green chillies split longitudinally
  • curry leaves
  • salt
  • turmeric powder
  • mirchi powder (optional)

For seasoning

  • 2 tbsp ground nuts / peanuts, can add cashew nuts as well as per liking
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp split urad daal
  • 1 tsp chana daal (bengal gram)
  • few red chillies
  • asafoetida

How to prepare

  1. Cook rice in pressure cooker, rice good should not be too sticky.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add the seasonings.
  3. On spluttering, add curry leaves, split green chillies and tamarind juice
  4. Add turmeric powder, mirchi powder and salt to it
  5. Keep stirring over low flame till the oil is separated from the tamarind juice.
  6. Remove it from the stove and add cooked rice to this stuff and stir it well.
